Benz-Micro LP Moving Coil Phono Cartridge and Tri-Planar VII Tonearm

Good old Benz-Micro cartridges. They have been around for so long that we take them for granted. As Rodney Dangerfield might have said, they get no respect. After living with the Benz “Ebony” LP moving coil phono cartridge for more than a year, I suggest that this is a mistake. Let’s see if we can elevate the awareness of and respect for the Benz-Micro brand.

Gullwing SLR Moving-coil Phono Cartridges

Time marches slowly in the world of high-end audio. We rarely see new products that can be called “revolutionary”. We have two of these under review here.

Bob’s Devices CineMag 1131 Blue Step Up Transformer

I can sum up this review right now: Turn it up! Loud has never sounded so good!

Cary PH-302 Phono Preamplifier

Sometimes work and play are indistinguishable from each other. When you really enjoy your job, you look forward to going to work and the days seem to pass quickly. Even though 10 Audio is a free service, I do take it seriously and sometimes, for the sake of providing good information to my readers, suffer through listening to some gear so you won’t have to.

Conrad Johnson Premier 15 Series 2 Phono Preamplifier

Think of the cardboard drink carrier that you get at the counter of a fast food restaurant when you order several drinks. The carrier doesn’t interact with the drinks in any way. The carrier doesn’t make the drinks colder or warmer or sweeter. It is simply a means to conveniently transport the drinks from one location to another.

EAR 88PB Phonograph Preamplifier

I was becoming complacent auditioning phono preamplifiers. It was as if I was standing in a long line for my turn on one of the good rides at Disneyland. If I was tolerant and patient, I would eventually be rewarded with a phono stage that would make all the waiting worthwhile.

Grado Sonata and Benz-Micro Glider Phono Cartridges

First, understand that these are two very good, but very different sounding cartridges. They are perhaps a peerless pair of the best performers in the crowded sub-$1,000 realm. Secondly, let me say that most people will not like both of these devices. In most ways that matter, the sound of the Grado Sonata and Benz-Micro Glider cartridges are so distinct that we're talking a tale of two cartridges here.
